Imagine this: a world-renowned champion, Tadej Pogačar, known for his dominance in cycling, is beaten in a race by an amateur. But here's the twist - it's not just any amateur, it's a 40-year-old British lawyer named Andrew Feather. This story is a testament to the beauty of sport and the unexpected outcomes it can bring.
The race, known as the 'Pogi Challenge', was organized by Pogačar himself in his hometown of Komenda. It was a unique event, starting as a mass ride and then transforming into a thrilling climb up Krvavec, a 13.9-kilometer ascent.
Pogačar, fresh from his victory in Il Lombardia, was the favorite to win this race too. But little did he know, Feather had other plans. Despite Pogačar's incredible performance, Feather managed to stay ahead, dropping all other competitors within minutes.
"I kept looking back, expecting Pogačar to catch up, but he never did," Feather shared with Cycling Weekly.
And here's where it gets controversial: Feather had a significant head start, but even with that advantage, he still managed to hold off Pogačar by over two minutes.
Pogačar, a true champion, took the defeat gracefully, acknowledging Feather's achievement. "I tried to catch everyone, but I couldn't," he said.
Feather, a four-time UK hill-climb champion, averaged an impressive 400 watts on the climb, but it wasn't enough to match Pogačar's speed.
This story raises an interesting question: Can an amateur truly beat a professional in their own game? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
