CALVARY CEMETERY & MAUSOLEUM, founded in St. Louis, MO in 1856 by Archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick of St. Louis, is the largest Catholic cemetery in America (approx. 350 acres)--holding the graves of thousands of notable Catholic clergy, religious and laity who were instrumental in the establishment and development of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Families derived from the French, Irish, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish, Bohemian, African-American, Lebanese, and Anglo-American heritages rest here, along with several noted converts to the faith. Some of these include: Archbishop Peter Kenrick (himself) and his successor, Archbishop John J. Kain: Father Charles Dismas Clark, S.J., the "Hoodlum Priest" of Hollywood movie fame who worked with reformed convicts: DRED SCOTT, the freed slave whose Supreme Court decision in 1854 led to the outbreak of the Civil War: General William Tec*mseh Sherman, U.S.A., who fought the war successfully for the Union cause: General Daniel Lyons Frost, CSA who fought the war for the Confederate cause and helped develop St. Louis University: DR. TOM DOOLEY, founder of Medico and a pioneer medical missionary to Southeast Asia whose cause for beatification has begun: TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, noted playwright who authored "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Catholic convert with his mother Edwina and brothers: John Appollonio Ghio, noted Italian philanthropist and industrialist: GEORGE I. HELLMUTH, pioneer church architect: EMIL FREI and JOSEPH SUMNER, pioneer stained glass artists: PROF. MAX SCHNEIDERHAHN, Mid-America's first professional trained Church sculptor: and hundreds of clergy from the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the Vincentian Fathers (Congregation of the Mission), the Archdiocese of St. Louis (two major Priest Lots), more than a dozen orders of nuns (including the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the Sisters of Loretto, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Holy Spirit Adoration ("Pink") Sisters, and others), and several governors of Missouri, mayors of St. Louis, and other noteworthy figures in the political, business, arts and cultural history of the nation, including Postmaster General ROBERT E. HANNEGAN. CALVARY CEMETERY is architecturally acclaimed, noted by the City Landmarks Registry and has been the site of several Hollywood filmings, including the recent "A Will of Her Own" on ABC. Still an active cemetery, Calvary is open to members of the Roman and Eastern Catholic Church and their relatives--averaging more than 1,400 burials per year. The stunning MAUSOLEUM features Venetian-style mosaics and an ornate carved marble and alabaster statue of the Blessed Mother. VISITING HOURS: Mon. thru Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Accessible by car and public transit, but the neighborhood is considered "risky."
