IMAGES AND BOOKS WILL GO INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN NEXT YEAR 2024 IS SENDING SHOCKWAVES THROUGH THE COPYRIGHT COMMUNITY, AND IT’S BRINGING A SMILE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A CRACK AT CREATING SOMETHING WITH THE MOST ICONIC IMAGE THAT DISNEY HAS EVER CREATED. BUT AS WESH 2’S MICHELLE MEREDITH REPORTS, THERE IS ONE HITCH. JANUARY 1ST, TO MOST OF US, IT’S SIMPLY NEW YEAR’S. WHAT IN THE LEGAL WORLD? IT’S ALSO NO PUBLIC DOMAIN DAY. THE DAY COPYRIGHTS TO ALL SORTS OF THINGS COME TO AN END, AND YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHOSE TURN IT IS THIS TIME. THAT’S RIGHT, MICKEY MOUSE. BUT ONLY, I REPEAT, ONLY THE EARLY VERSION OF HIM DATING BACK TO THE 20S. THE LITTLE STICK LEGGED MICKEY THAT APPEARED IN STEAMBOAT WILLIE. THIS IS LIKE BIG A BIG DEAL. IT IS? YEAH. IT’S CRAZY. JENNIFER ENGLERT, A COPYRIGHT ATTORNEY WITH THE ORLANDO LAW GROUP, SAYS NOT ONLY IS THE IMAGE ICONIC, IT’S BEEN SO PROTECTED. I THINK EVERYBODY IS KIND OF KNOWN THAT MICKEY AND DISNEY THAT THEY REALLY TAKE THEIR COPYRIGHTS VERY SERIOUSLY. WE’VE ALL HEARD STORIES ABOUT, LIKE THE DAYCARES WHERE THEY PUT MICKEY ON THE WALL AND THEN THEY’RE GETTING CEASE AND DESISTS AND THINGS. BUT NOT FOR YOUNG MICKEY ANYMORE. FOR ONCE, THE COPYRIGHT IS LIFTED ON JANUARY 1ST. PEOPLE CAN USE IT TO MAKE POTHOLDERS, DISH TOWELS, STATUES, VIDEOS, APPS SOLUTELY FREE, WHICH IS A BIT CONCERNING WHEN WINNIE THE POOH WENT INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, THE LOVABLE BEAR WAS FEATURED IN A HORROR FLICK, A YOUNG MICKEY HORROR MOVIE. YES, I COULD THINK OF A FEW WORSE THINGS. I BET YOU YOU CAN DO SO I’M SURE DISNEY IS NOT JUST GOING TO SIT BACK AND LET JUST ABOUT ANYTHING HAPPEN, AND SOME DISNEY ENTHUSIAST AREN’T EXACTLY THRILLED EITHER. I’VE BEEN TO EVERY DISNEY PARK IN THE WORLD LIKE KELLY LANGTON. SHE SAYS SHE WILL CONTINUE TO STICK TO THE BRAND. THE REAL DEAL EVERY ITEM REPRESENTS. IT’S AN EXPERIENCE OR A MOMENT OR SOMETHING THAT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME. THAT’S A MEMORY. THAT’S BEEN CREATED AT DISNEY. SO FOR NOW, YOUNG MICKEY, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. AND AS FOR MODERN MICKEY, WE’LL HOLD ON TO YOUR MOUSE EARS BECAUSE HIS IMAGE IS STILL OFF LIMITS.
