Your guide to Memorial Day parades, ceremonies and festivals scheduled for the weekend in Northeast Ohio (2024)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day means the warm weather has arrived and summer is around the corner.

In addition to the families celebrating the three-day weekend with picnics and parties, local communities have scheduled various events reminding residents about the meaning of the holiday, which honors those who died while serving in the military.

Avon

The Memorial Day Parade takes steps off at 9 a.m. Monday at the Avon Senior Center, travels down Detroit Road and ends at the Veterans Memorial, which is located behind the post office at 36225 Detroit Road. Service will immediately follow the parade.

Avon Lake

The city parade will be at 10 a.m. Monday. It begins at Avon Lake High School, 175 Avon Belden Road, and ends with a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, which is located at 32756 Lake Road.

Bedford

Bedford’s parade begins at 10:15 a.m. Monday. It will start at Bedford City Hall, 165 Center Road, and proceed on Center Road to Broadway Avenue where it halts at the Bedford Commons for a brief ceremony. At the conclusion of these ceremonies, the parade will reassemble and proceed south on Broadway Avenue to the Bedford Cemetery for the concluding ceremonies.

Berea

Berea’s Community Memorial Day Service, which is hosted by the city and The Veterans Outreach Office, takes place at 11 a.m. Monday at the Coe Lake Gazebo, located at 105 S. Rocky River Drive. The affair includes a reading of Berea’s fallen soldiers by family members and friends.

Brecksville

The parade procession will step off at 11 a.m. Monday. The parade will proceed north on Route 21 to Public Square and will move west on Route 82 to Highland Drive and into the cemetery.

Broadview Heights

The city’s Memorial Day Parade steps off at 9 a.m. Monday from The Crossings Shopping Center on West Royalton Road and ends at the Broadview Community Center Amphitheater for a memorial service to honor fallen soldiers. Families are invited to decorate their bikes and be part of the parade.

Brooklyn

The Memorial Day parade steps off at 11 a.m. Monday from the Brooklyn Recreation Center, heads east on Memphis Avenue, south on Ridge Road, west on Biddulph Road and then north on Roadoan Road ending at the Brooklyn High School stadium whereupon ceremonies will begin at noon.

Chagrin Falls

Chagrin Falls will host its annual Blossom Time festival throughout the weekend. The four-day event (May 26-29) includes carnival rides, parades, live music, pie-eating contests and more. The festivities close out with a parade at 10 a.m. Monday at Triangle Park. Afterward, a ceremony will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Cleveland Heights

The city will have its Memorial Day ceremony for veterans at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cleveland Heights Veterans Memorial in Cumberland Park on Mayfield Road across from the Community Center.

Euclid

Its graveside services begin at 7:45 a.m. Monday at Euclid Cemetery and 8:15 a.m. at St. Paul’s Cemetery. The city’s parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Lakeshore Boulevard and E. 228 Street, proceeds west on Lakeshore Boulevard to E. 222nd Street, south on E. 222nd Street and ends at the Veterans Memorial next to Euclid City Hall, located at 585 E. 222nd St.

Fairview Park

The Memorial Day parade steps off at 9 a.m. Monday from Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home and goes to the Fairview Park Cemetery with a ceremony honoring Fairview Park’s fallen.

Garfield Heights

The Memorial Day weekend celebration includes Touch-A-Truck and The Balloon Vibe’s Brad Thompson on Saturday at the Garfield Heights Civic Center, a Classic Car Show and Operation Flags of Freedom Ceremony at noon Sunday and the city’s Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at Mapleleaf Elementary School, 5764 Turney Road, followed by a service at Veterans Plaza at the Garfield Heights Civic Center.

Highland Heights

The annual observance takes place at 10 a.m. Monday at the Veteran’s Peace Memorial, located near the fire station, at 5827 Highland Road.

Independence

Independence’s services and procession begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Monument on Public Square. Immediately after the service and wreath-laying ceremony, there will be a procession to Maple Shade Cemetery, where a short, graveside service will follow.

Lake View Cemetery

The cemetery will honor veterans at a service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at 12316 Euclid Avenue. Flags will be available for placement at the graves of loved ones who served.

Lakewood

The Joint Veterans Council of Lakewood and Rocky River will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony 10 a.m. Monday at Lakewood Park Cemetery, which is located at 22025 Detroit Road.

Mayfield Heights

The city’s Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of the police station at 6154 Mayfield Road.

Medina

The Memorial Day parade steps off at 10:15 a.m. Monday near the Medina County Courthouse. It will go to Spring Grove Cemetery, where there will be a ceremony.

Mentor

The city’s solemn parade begins at 9:20 a.m. Monday from Memorial Middle School, located at 8979 Mentor Ave., and proceeds north to the Mentor Cemetery, 6881 Hopkins Road. The keynote address will be given by Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

The ceremony, typically held at the southern end of the cemetery, will now take place on the new Memorial Promenade located near the administration building, which will be formally dedicated with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m.

North Olmsted

Observance of Memorial Day begins at 6:45 a.m. Monday for muster at the North Olmsted VFW Post 7647 with the flag lowered to half-staff.

At 7:45 a.m., the mustering of the color guard including VFW auxiliary and members at Old Town Hall. The ceremony at 8 a.m. is followed by ceremonies at Coe Cemetery and Butternut Cemetery.

Sponsored by the North Olmsted V.F.W. Post 7647, and the city of North Olmsted, the Memorial Day parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. from the North Olmsted Police Department parking lot to North Olmsted Community Park.

North Ridgeville

The parade will assemble at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the North Ridgeville Senior Center, 7327 Avon Belden Road. It travels east down Bainbridge Road and ends at Ranger Stadium with a ceremony to follow.

Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery

The grave flag placement will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday with a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at the cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville. Parking is limited. The cemetery is one of two national cemeteries in Ohio. The other is Dayton National Cemetery.

Olmsted Falls

The Memorial Day Parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. Monday from Falls-Lenox Primary School heading east on Bagley Road to Columbia Road north before ending at the Village Green gazebo for a ceremony.

Parma

A full-color guard ceremony -- including remarks from Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter -- is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Park.

Parma Heights

The city hosts its 156th annual Memorial Day Service at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Parma-South Presbyterian Church located at 6155 Pearl Road. The event is followed by the wreath-laying ceremony to honor the fallen at the Parma Heights Cemetery on Pearl Road.

Pepper Pike

Pepper Pike will host a commemorative ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday in front of City Hall.

Richmond Heights

The Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Community Park, located at 27285 Highland Road, followed by the parade stepping off at 11:30 a.m. at Momentive Technologies (24400 Highland Road) and heading back to the Richmond Community Park for a picnic.

Rocky River

The Joint Veterans Council of Lakewood and Rocky River will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Lakewood Park Cemetery, which is located at 22025 Detroit Road.

Seven Hills

The city of Seven Hills’ Memorial Day parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the St. Columbkille parking lot, proceeds south on Broadview Road to Hillside Road and ends at city hall, where at 11:15 a.m. a remembrance ceremony is scheduled.

Shaker Heights

The city’s ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Monday at City Hall. Afterward, the parade will begin at Van Aken Boulevard and Lee Road and proceed east to the Van Aken District in the westbound lane of Van Aken Boulevard.

South Euclid

Due to road construction on Green Road, this year’s Memorial Day parade, which steps off at 9 a.m. Monday, begins at the parking lot behind Key Bank (the northeast corner of Mayfield and Green roads) before proceeding north on Green Road to the war memorial at Green and Anderson roads.

University Heights

The city’s parade begins at 11 a.m. Monday. between Ashurst and Canterbury roads before ending at Gearity Professional Development School.

Westlake

The Kiwanis Club’s annual parade will depart at 10 a.m. Monday from St. Peter & George Coptic Orthodox Church, 25800 Hilliard Boulevard, and go to Clague Park. A ceremony will follow.

Willoughby

The city’s parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Erie Street/Third Street. It will go along to Euclid Avenue and turn onto Park Avenue, then onto Murray Avenue. A ceremony will follow. A second ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Willoughby Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Lakeshore Boulevard.
